The University of Wales – Aberystwyth (UWA’s) Department of Commercialisation and Consultancy Services (CCS) aims to facilitate the exploitation of UWA IP for maximum benefit to the University. As well as providing advice and support on all aspects of the technology transfer process, CCS also provides project management and associated services to ensure the smooth running of UWA’s commercial work.
CCS wanted to understand whether its internal processes were operating to maximise the potential commercial benefits of UWA’s IP assets. Furthermore CCS wanted to ensure that the IP’s potential value was not undermined through inadvertent disclosure. A need existed to develop a clear understanding of what was the current status of its technical know-how and other IP assets (e.g. inventions).
We were commissioned to undertake an IP audit across all academic departments: rural sciences; biological sciences; computer science; geographical and earth sciences; mathematics and physical sciences. The purpose of the audit was to:
The audit identified several new opportunities for IP capture through filing of patents. As part of the audit we reviewed the IP landscape for two putative inventions, to develop an understanding of their commercial potential. In addition, we met all of the objectives for the work that was carried out and made recommendations for enhanced processes for IP capture.
