INTIPSA webinar: The Great Patent Bubble of 201

INTIPSA webinar: The Great Patent Bubble of 2011

The high-profile Nortel auction, Google’s acquisition of Motorola, HP’s acquisition of Autonomy, and the landmark sale of the Round Rock covenant all emphasised intellectual property as a strategic asset in the news.

This first INTIPSA webinar surveyed the new landscape and asked what it means for businesses as a whole. Experts reflected on the developments seen in IP markets over recent months and look at the implications for ‘main street’ businesses, both corporates and SMEs.

  • Are recent deals a sign that IP really has gone ‘mainstream’ and is being recognised as a strategic asset, or is it a bubble that is set to burst?
  • Is the boardroom interest in IP valuation a phenomenon unique to ICT or are other sectors affected as well?
  • What are the implications for how corporations manage and value their IP in the future?
  • How should small businesses and start-ups respond to this new environment?

Two expert panellists reflected on recent events:

  • Ralph Eckardt, Managing Director and Co-Founder, 3LP Advisors, LLC, a firm founded in 2008 and focused on IP strategy development, patent portfolio transactions and IP-based investments. 3LP has offices in Boston and Palo Alto. Ralph works with companies to develop and implement IP strategies, acquire strategic IP assets and monetise intellectual property through patent sales.
  • Peter Holden, Investment Partner, Coller Capital, the leading global investor in private equity’s secondary market. Peter has spent over years leveraging research and technology assets from corporations, research centres and universities worldwide. During this time, he has managed over 150 spin-outs, start-ups and licensing programmes and concluded successful IP deals.
