Coller IP Management’s Chief Operating Officer, Jim Asher, presented his views on IP Commercialisation at a Black Country Chamber of Commerce on 18th October, at West Bromwich Albion Football Ground, Hawthorns.
Questions to be answered included:
Do you understand the value of intellectual Property ( IP) to your business?
Do you know the value of protecting your assets?
Are you losing potential income by not exploiting your IP Value?
The presenters outlined the impact intellectual Property issues could have on business and there was an opportunity to discuss common issues and to network.
After the event Jim commented “Yet again, this event demonstrated the need for awareness-raising of IP issues, an interest in finding out more about it, and the benefit of discussions. The nature of the questions showed that awareness of some very simple issues in IP is low and that there are real benefits in improving understanding of basics, including IP terms in contracts (especially supplier contracts) and the benefits and limitations of patents, trade secrets, copyright and designs. Even though the event was well attended, it reached only a tiny proportion of the relevant companies in the West Midlands. More is required to stimulate awareness in the region.”
Jim said “It was good that non-technology-based companies participated – Intellectual Capital is not just about technology, and the discussion session proved this point. I feel we need to be raising case studies involving local companies to further sharpen the interest and impact.” .
