Lionel brings over 20 years of experience of working in the patent profession, drafting, filing and prosecuting patents, both in the UK and overseas. Lionel also provides product clearance advice and consults on FTO issues, calling on his experience in both challenging and defending IP. He has worked in major multinational companies at the corporate level where he was responsible for the commercial protection of product lines and enabling technologies. Lionel has also worked in private practice for a very large UK firm of Patent Attorneys where he was responsible for looking after a life sciences IP portfolio and challenged and defended granted patents before the EPO. He has particular experience in the life sciences area, where for the last 10 years he has been involved with patenting and licensing activities for a range of clients encompassing academic establishments, R&D institutions and large multi-national corporations. As a result of these activities he is skilled at assessing the relevance or otherwise of life science and chemistry-related technologies from a commercial and IP perspective.
Further, he has a very good understanding of the barriers associated with the commercialisation of IP as a result of his involvement in brokering commercial deals (including licensing) for various enterprises. The latter has provided Lionel with a sharp insight into the barriers and challenges faced by academic institutions and importantly how they can best be addressed.
